WEST SIDE STORY
based on a conception of Jerome Robbins, book by Arthur Laurents
music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
directed by Kysa Cohen
music directed by Bill Wolfe, choreographed by Stephen Agosto
produced by Ana Flück, Don Stanton & Bill Verhaegen

Shakespeare’s Romeo And Juliet is transplanted to modern-day New York City, as two young idealistic lovers find themselves caught between warring street gangs. Their struggle to survive in a world of hate, violence and prejudice is one of the most innovative, heart-wrenching and relevant musical dramas of our time. The innocent young protagonist, who belongs to an established local gang (the Jets), falls in love with "Maria," the sister of the leader of the rival gang (the Sharks). The dark theme, sophisticated music, and focus on social problems marked a turning point in American musical theater, which had leaned previously toward light themes.
